Greetings from Chicago!
I currently have several suppliers on the other side of the globe. Trying to time contracts gets a little difficult.
Would it be feasible for contract requests?
For instance, my egg supplier would guarantee 10k eggs at x price, then he starts a contract. The supplier would select what type of contract it is: One time, Limited, or Unlimited(as stock allows). There would be a check mark box that BOTH parties need to check to agree.
This is NOT meant to be a fully automatic contract.
If my egg supplier has 100,000 eggs in his warehouse, and my Ongoing contract are in increments of 10,000, I can continually request additional 10,000 egg contracts as I need them, until there are no more eggs left. IF he does this with several people, it is first come, first served. If there are no more eggs left, and I request more, a message pops up, stating no more inventory.
Either party can cancel at any time, especially if prices change.
I feel like this will help us that deal internationally for sure, because it will cover those odd hours when one party is sleeping and the other is awake.

I forgot to add that a Limited contract would simply state in advance how many requests are allowed. 2, 3,5 etc. Then the contract terminates

I concur, that timing contracts is a little frustrating (waiting for money versus some level of instant gratification).
However, my view on a desired implementation would look a little more like the following: - Buyer locates a Supplier
- Buyer places an Order with Supplier (asynchronously)
- Supplier accepts the Buyer's Order
- >>> An Inverse Method To The Current Method <<<
- HAVE Both: Supplier Contracts (current) and Buyer Contracts (proposed)

That was what I originally had in mind, but then we run into the same problem of people residing on opposite sides of the globe. Even if I as a buyer place a contract, if the producer is sleeping I still have to wait.

Auto Contract Fulfillment? I say yes!
If making money while you sleep is the primary goal, then I would think Auto Contract Fulfillment (AFC) would be a good implementation. With AFC, a player could toggle on/off their desire to AFC from inventory (it would be like given the SimPeople, working the WH while you (the boss/hefe/owner) is not their, the ability to keep money circulating into the business.
I Like This SimPeople Ability --- All of the Retail businesses do it already...

That idea is also pretty cool.
But this game is highly social and I believe that's what makes it different from other games. Any fully automatic feature would almost eliminate human interaction.
That and it would be difficult for those that only contract part of their inventory. Some people retail their own wares, and contract the extra. How would you throttle that?
I'm trying to come up with an idea that unifies different parts of the world with opposite time zones, and still maintain the social aspects.
