Early and midgame miners tend to make lower profits. For minerals, people only end up mining low-price minerals if they get high abundance while prospecting, and get stuck with mediocre profit as a result.
Better for many players is manufacturing, of which low-cost minerals are often used. This industry often helps onboarding as so many industries require these inputs.
So, space mining. This would require existing and new AS components to set up, and space mines could only yield low-cost fundamental resources e.g. iron ore, aluminium, minerals. This would also push earth-miners to more prospecting for higher-price minerals such as gold, which is maybe better for them in the long run. This would also give more opportunities in endgame.
As a slightly new mechanic, and for balance, prospecting for space mines could take much longer. When prospecting, some resources (either fuel, or everything) could be lost.
