I've come across several ideas regarding the transportation industry, some of which I've pondered upon myself. I'd like to consolidate these ideas into one post and create an in-depth discussion of how they could be properly implemented. It would be of utmost importance to consider game mechanics (how will this affect new users versus experienced users) and the amount of coding necessary (which I'm definitely no expert).
New methods of transportation:
Truck
Rail
Ship
Plane
Mileage Based Transportation Costs:
Each business in game will have a 'Home City' selected. Transportation costs will be the mileage between their city and a buyer/seller's city. If both companies are based in the same city, then I think it's realistic to assume a minimum transportation fee (or set mileage). To prevent all companies from selecting the same 'Home City' to avoid shipping costs, a tax based on how many users are based in a particular city would be implemented. This tax could be waived to users below Level xx.
Transportation Lag Times:
In real life an item that is shipped takes time to be transported from Point A to Point B. I'm not particularly fond of this idea but I'm willing to explore it. After all, it would create a reason someone might choose one method of transport over another (planes are fast but expensive, ships and rail can move a huge amount of goods but are slow, and trucks are sort of a happy middle ground).
--------
I will be posting more on how I think these methods could be practically implemented within the game. I invite anyone else to share their input but please keep in mind the more complexity involved, the more work there will be for the developers of the game. Let's try to keep our ideas as simple as possible (which will be a challenge for me.. lol).
Finally, I am an American truck driver in real life. I think a lot about the cost of running my truck and the trucking industry. I also dive into the logistics of other transportation industries from time to time but I'm not very experienced with them. As we develop this idea, it would be great to have some people well versed on the workings of train, ship, and plane networks.
